THE WEEKLY KNIGHT
-------------------
(for October 10, 1992)
This year's US Women's Championship, played 19-31 August at
Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts, also served as a
qualifying tournament for the 1993 Women's Interzonal. Since
WGM Irina Levitina automatically qualified as a result of her
present seeding in the current World Championship cycle,
only the remaining nine competitors battled for the three
available Interzonal slots.
Given the absence of Elena Akhmilovskaya-Donaldson and Anna
Achsharumova-Gulko, two of the big names in US women's chess,
Irina Levitina breezed her way to an undefeated, two point
victory in the tournament over her nearest competitor. She
took home the title and the $2,000 first prize for her 8-1
record. This is the second year in a row that Irina has won
the championship.
Second place went to local Massachusetts WIM, 1991 US Women's
Co-champion (with Levitina) and member of the US women's team
at the recent Manila Olympiad, Esther Epstein. For her
undefeated 6-3 finish, Epstein earned the first of the three
Interzonal places.
Tied for third and fourth places and the recipients of the
final two slots were relative newcomers' Julia Tverskaya,
sporting a 2361 rating and Yuliya Levitan, the highest rated
US woman under age 20 and Manila Olympiad team member. Each
had three wins, five draws and one loss for a score of 5.5
out of 9.
Levitina played first board at Manila. Typical of her
style is the following positional gem from the match against
Latvia. Note that in the final position, Black resigned
because she's in zugzwang.
